How To Write A Proper Descriptive Essay Outline: Tips & Examples

Descriptive essays can be really fun to write, but you might still need a little help along the way. To begin your paper, it's a good idea to have a outline. An outline can be so helpful in getting you started to write. If you know exactly what you're writing and how you're going to write it, your essay will be finished faster than you think!

Think about your topic. Who or what do you want to describe? Why have you chosen his subject in particular – what makes it so important?

Remember that it is meant to teach others a lesson, so think about what you want that lesson to be. If you really wanted to write about a specific memory but can't think of any lesson that was learned, try to think of one that would be better to use. Without the lesson, there isn't much point to the essay. It's better to use something that you know will work.

On average, essays should contain an introduction, three main body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Your essay might be longer than that, but there is an example of what your outline should look like:

  • Introduction
  • Thesis statement – something that grabs the reader's attention

Describe the details of your subject (who, what, where, when, etc.)

Tell the readers how you feel about the subject

  • Main Body
  • Give facts or data about your topic that relates to the thesis statement

Give sensory details – explain how it smells, looks, tastes, etc.

Tell your readers how or why your facts support your thesis

  • Conclusion
  • Restate your thesis

Summarize what you described in your essay

Bring it to a logical conclusion that backs up your thesis

The most important thing is to be descriptive. If you're describing a memory, tell the readers about the place, the people, the surroundings. If your topic is food, what does it look like, taste like, smell like? If you're writing about love, how does it feel?

This is no wrong answer here. Whatever your topic is, it should be from your point of view, from your own experiences. All you have to do is think about how you feel when you think of your topic and what it means to you.

You don't have to worry about being fancy or impressive. As long as you use descriptive words to express the subject of your paper, you can't go wrong!
